Lords of Rap – Stix ‘N’ Stones EP 1992

We dont do many vinyl ups but this one is a classic. Im not a huge fan of, and have an insufficient archive of quality UK based Rap, but the 3 B-Side cuts on this EP from Battersea crew Lords of Rap are top quality, and funny, and find subject matter in such diverse topics as mates that have ugly GFs, and being pissed off with CD sales takin over vinyl, and well, you listen…

They were one of the few crews that gained praise from the simple fact that they resisted using American accents. Their strong SW11 pronunciations lending themselves to one of the most original EPs in UK Hip-Hop history. I mean, how could you resist this eloquent and refined word-play regarding a lady…

“Fancy your chances, I dont fancy yours much. She’s saggy bout the breast and her crutch has seen too much.

She’s double scary, sometimes I get lary. Have a word with ye bird an’ cover her face cos its hairy”

Snaps Comedy CD AKA Bizmarkie Tracy Morgan & Coolio tellin Mom jokes…

There are dozens of blogs that simply feature downloads, but HOTASBALLS have never had the desire to just post music without offering opinion, that’s wack, and blinkered, and a bit silly in the scheme of things really.

I’ve been asked to contribute to the archives at http://www.olasunbekons.com, and as youll know, archive access is a terrible thing to waste, so I accepted. Olas have very little to say [and I’d much rather be contributing to a site that uses simple design and Helvetica as a type-face], but when they do, they are bang on it with enough info to inspire a cheeky download that may have passed you by otherwise, the strength of titles across genres is deep and of course, like http://www.hqhiphop.net the quality of transfers are all great, whether VLS, CD or TC [tape cassettes will also feature as part of the bounty too as seen with my 1st, a rare as hens hind-legs UK Hip-Hop holy grail, the unreleased promo cassette of Blak Twangs Dettwork S.E. alblum].

I have no interest in French or Australian Rap myself but Im often surprised at the titles that consistently appear each week, that’s why Olas became a regular RSS feature. Just this morning, one of the many Masters of Records there, DJ Warlord, kindly upped a 15 minute P Funk work-out from 1981 that features George Clinton and Bootsy, rare and totally random, and tasty…

I never imagined that I’d ever want to distribute anything from my masses of digital music, but im beginning to warm to sharing when I see the amount of people downloading them. I know folk appreciate, I just prefer more banter. I came to this conclusion cos I recognise that as much as I’ve wanted to thank every single blogger/ host for sharing good shit when Ive been the ripper, I dont thank em every time. This is me returning the favour with a mere sliver of my collection

Im gonna upload this one here first. It’s a Comedy alblum released on Big Beat Records in 95 that has a few interestin people on it. Check the CD credits; Biz, Tracy Morgan, Carlos Mencia, Faizon Love, Ricky Harris, Coolio, and even, erm, Lords Of The Underground. Ostensibly it’s a collection of Mom jokes that should bolster your back-catalogue next time you plan on baggin on yer mates

Westwood – Capital Rap Show Saturday 19 January 1991

‘Live from the science lab, were schooling ruling and a cooling’ allegedly…

Here’s a Westwood show from 20 years ago this weekend…

Timmy had obviously just received his copy of Breaking Atoms as he drops a heap of ‘specials’ including a world premiere of Snake Eyes and Think. It’s the Saturday night show, so there are a few popcorn cuts as well as tracks from Stets Blood, Sweat & No Tears, the KRS produced H.E.A.L. project and of course the Break to the Beat comp. There’s a segment of a Guy interview from another night at the end of Side B too, cant remember if thats from the night before or not. Any info appreciated. If anyone is holdin the Main Source interview from the night before, hit us up. Dont forget to call in for those Cool J tickets.

Big shouts to anyone that ever attended The Slammer in Gravesend [pause]

The Cassette Era AKA In the PJs, my blend tape plays

Mr Jones looks back at the science of recording radio shows onto a format long forgotten about, from the days when he was a ‘young city bandit’. He talks about the importance of twiddling up and down the dial during the days when more than one show was on the New York FM airwaves, the colour of the physical tape and even the fragrance of a fresh cassette. Top choice clip for the throwback crowd and anyone that put their batteries in the freezer to recharge em

To listen to a multi-million selling artist talk about those live tapes and park jams with such affection and admit theyre still hurtin from missing those tapes is something anyone who did the same back then can equate to. I wonder if Nasir repeatedly used the same C90 before he got his double tape player. Anyone that has any Fresh Fest recordings needs to get in touch too btw

It can be a painful experience to recount those lost tapes sometimes. Thankfully, some of us held on to em and folk like ourselves and Dutch are resurrecting those broadcasts and live sessions. I hear the Fat Lace chaps are bringin some Westwood back real soon too, ‘HOLD TIGHT, WATCH THE RIDE’.

This also erm, amps us. Shouts to Dom for the heads-up, and to Jappy Jap for havin one of the most ridiculous names ever.
