Westwood VHS archives: Rakim, Ultra, PE, LL Cool J Live from London….

Tim Westwood has been going in heavy on the archival action recently. He’s been uploading unreleased and never seen before footage from iconic performances  like Rakim at Hammersmith, Ultramagnetic in Camden, Derek B live at the Hammersmith Palais and more…

Tims clips capture the raw excitement of the embryonic stages of the London Hip Hop youth culture in clips that feature body-popping on corners of Trafalgar Square, and under the watchful eye of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square.  And as well as these, he has also added outtakes from the N-Sign Rap show. We all know about the Bizmarkie handshake debacle but what about a young Will Smith dropping more bloopers than Dennis Norden !

DJ Cash Money – Need To Learno Plot One

They call him Cash Cash Money, but his name his, erm, Jerome…

HOTASBALLS have history, admittedly, ALOT of Hip-Hop history, that’s why the Hip-Hop soundtrack for the creators of this blog is anything from pre-1980 community centre Hip-Hop from the likes of Johnny Wah or Masterdon Committee, to blissed out lethargic G-Funk, via the gnarliest Mobb sound that would guarantee to put hairs on yer wee chest. This time round, its gold school Hip-Hop at it’s finest. Some Crash Crew, Busy Bee, some CC4 live, Treach3, Funky4, T-Connection & the elusive Radiance with RC La Rock amongst others. Straight pre golden-era park jam top-rockin type Hip-Hop, in a mixtape. I’ve done my best to tweak the eqs in an attempt to re-master it, it was a pretty shitty quality tape to start with but Ive done my best…

The mixtape has one of the tightest examples of scratching, on a mixtape, like ever. True story.

Here’s Cash and Marvellous during 1988, on the Tim Westwood hosted Night Network TV Show ‘N-Sign Radio’, performing Ugly Woman and another tight as feck routine.

Johnny Dett – Uncut Raw Mixtape

Any man that can hold his own behind a pair, with a pair of doubles in his hands, gets our vote. I dont listen to many zulu breaks tapes as I top-rock any longer, but I can appreciate the musical taste and the skills

This entirely live mix [no 4-track akshun here] comes from the man fresh from the King of the B-Boys battle in Birmingham last weekend, Johnny Dett aka Velvet Jones from HURTYOUBAD aka the Hip-Hop backbone of the mighty mighty Work It Club night in Dalston.

Not dissimilar to the Skamrok tape ‘Rok with Style’ from a few months back; the basic criteria is good music, there are breaks on there from all over, Malaysia, Russia, Israel etc, that happen to be uptempo, raw and follow the percussive principles for a zulu feckin throw-down/ beat-down of a mixtape !
