Urban exploration…

If I wanted to catch an ‘extreme’ activities vibe I’d either be on 2 wheels traversing a muddied forest trail behind Wimbledon Common at top speed, doing the weekly shop on a Saturday afternoon or jogging my 6’4″ frame around the environs of South London [both equally challenging, and dangerous]. I sure as feck wouldnt be mountaineering, bungee jumping or doing anything similarly ‘action sports’ based to re-up my dopamine levels. Do Champion do wing-suits ?

Im far from spineless, but no longer do I have the Superintendent Rawls to handle ‘urban exploration’. If I did I’d be in like a shot, but sadly my days of challenging and illegal nocturnal adventures are long over. Watching these counter-culturalists however not only gave my vertiginous legs a major wobble [even while sitting down], it also highlighted a fascinating underground element of London I wasnt aware of.

I just like the idea of nonchalantly walking into the lobby of a 72 floor ‘luxury condominium unit’ in Chicago with my nearest and dearest, and hangin out on the roof watchin the sun rise, or taking a dander to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge while the city sleeps peacefully below…

Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary…

Rocksteady Crew doc from 1981/ 1982 ?

As well as droppin Hip-Hop gems from 2012 on ye, we are also known for that throwback ish, so here’s another little jewel from the same guy that dropped the Disco Fever footage a while back

I recognised a few moments from this footage but its not something Ive seen the whole way through before. Its another simple TV documentary charting the rise of the Rock Steady Crew back around 81 or 82. Its simple in its presentation, utilising radio broadcasts from KTU92 and park jams as the soundtrack [mainly cos they are whats bein played on boxes and in photographic studios].

As well as some insightful inteviews with members of RSC, the moving picture documentation of New York City back then is the true highlight, seeing NY in the rain and the snow still appeals. Keep an eye out for the shearling sheepskins, the polo-necks, bobble hats, fat laces and the kicks. Even the Bronx River Parkway looks good.

Peep homeboys VIMEO for more public service announcements regarding the perils of graffiti, a decent rip of BOMBIN, footage of dance competitions from The Roxy and a bunch of throwbacks you mighta missed…

“Smokin out in London, and they handing me fish and chips”

not a life changer, but, still a nice lil’ sumthing for the headphones (grado, that is)..

absorb the beat, realise that it’s probly the best flip of the B.Whizzle drums (no lisa stansfield) youv’e heard, forget the first rap singer, and tune in when Mr “the Truth” comes in..all of the Mc’s come wildly differently, but all shine, including Wale, who’s never really impressed me too much (although, the line about loving his mother, and never getting married says a little too much, also, ELTON)

most improved goes to Young Khalifa Man, sounds like he may of even got his pad out for this..not just rhyming, well i might add, but using some nice inflection to sprinkle some more flavour over this niiice beat..one for the pad, or pod, or whatever.

Hard To Learn..

If you don’t know about Schoolboy Q, shame on you, as his “Setbacks” Fralbum was one of the best in recent years..anyways, his new one is out in a week, so familiarise yourself, and you can say you were down…
